Cars in films

Cars have been an integral part in Hollywood films for many years and after a discussion with a colleague I thought it might be worthwhile to look at the issues raised in the movies surrounding cars.

Firstly I should declare that I like most car chases in films and the film ‘Gone in 60 seconds’ was an absolute car fest, even if the means of acquisition were a little suspect.

The driving standards portrayed on screen are usually below what is expected of the normal driver, but the skill required to drive that badly on screen takes extreme skill on the part of the stunt driver concerned.  Before you consider driving as recklessly as your heroes do on screen, you should think about the way in which the driving has been prepared and rehearsed.

For James Bond to chase a car down a mountain road takes hours of slow rehearsal, a closed road and two stunt drivers working in perfect harmony.  The final effect is amazing and looks almost effortless.
