Top Gear and Trucks

Having watched last nights Top Gear I would suggest that all drivers watch it as it will give you a very loose insight into the world of trucks.  I say it is only a loose insight because as usual the boys at Top Gear approached the task of getting and driving trucks with an excess of enthusiasm and a lack of skill.

It did demonstrate the need for proper training in all areas of large vehicle use.  The presenters drove with no awareness of the dimensions of their vehicles and should have been trained how to drive the trucks they had.  They had no idea how to select the gears for the vehicles and they drove these large vehicles with their usual gung-ho attitude which caused Jeremy Clarkson to have an injury.

If you ever needed a demonstration about good load security then this programme was it.  You can never rely on gravity as Richard Hammond showed with a car in the back of his trailer which eventually knocked it way out the back.  Now I don’t think the hand brake was set on the car, but Jeremy Clarkson had a stack of hay bales in his trailer which moved and set fire to his trailer.

Jeremy did make the observation that driving trucks was hard work and not as easy as it might appear and I have to say that it is probably the most astute thing he has said in quite a while.
