Should the UK Government be more honest?
There is talk of changing the charging system for persons travelling at a speed that is 20mph over the posted speed limit. The government wish to change the Fixed Penalty system to allow for drivers travelling 20 mph in excess of the posted speed limit to be given 6 penalty points instead of 3 penalty points.
If they were honest they would say that this measure will reduce the costs incurred in taking these drivers to Magistrates court as they do now, but they are claiming that it will reduce the number of roads deaths. There is nothing wrong with reducing costs, if that is the aim. Being honest is not a crime.
Now my views on speed have been well publicised here and in other places, but again I have to say speed does not kill it is inappropriate speed that can do the damage.
Also they want to reduce the drink drive alcohol limit, but they seem to forget that our penalties are the harshest in Europe. If you are caught drinking and driving then you will get a minimum 12 month driving ban, no negotiation, full stop. That seems to be reasonable to me, but if we reduce the limit will we relax the penalties?
Perhaps we should focus on making drivers better in education terms rather than these penalties for the idiots on our roads. we have the ability to take these people off our roads without having foolish policies like variable penalties for speeding.
The courier shop are discussing this topic as well with a different emphasis that are also worth considering.
