Insurance and Risk Management – The differences
We discussed yesterday some of the differences between Insurance and a Risk Policy, as a result of questions posed by some readers I thought I would explain in more detail what you can expect from both Insurance and a Risk Policy.
If you use a vehicle on the public highway you are required to have insurance for that vehicle and if you use it for business that insurance needs to be for business use. If your business does not own the vehicle, you still have a responsibility to ensure the owner has the right insurance because your business is using the vehicle.
Also as a business you should have Public Liability insurance to cover you should you injure someone with your business activities and this should include vehicle related accidents.
Now both of these insurance policies will pay for the injuries and/or damages resulting from your actions, but they may not pay for any legal actions and will definitely not pay any fines you incur.
If you have a suitable Risk Management Policy in place it can be used in the interviews with the Police and Health and Safety Executive to manage their investigations and may very well prevent your business being prosecuted and taken to court. It will demonstrate that you have taken reasonable steps to protect the public and your workforce.
So having a good policy could save you a significant amount of money and may even help you avoid prosecution, but you have to actually use the policy and not just have it and leave it on the shelf.
