Couriers and other companies using vans with Tail-lifts

If you are using a vehicle with a tail-lift as part of your business you need to be aware of the fact that this tail-lift falls under LOLER.  LOLER is The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 and covers equipment used to lift or lower a load.  These types of vehicles are used by couriers and home delivery companies as they allow the lifting and lowering of loads in safety.

If a person is injured as a result of using a Tail-lift that has not been inspected then the owner of the vehicle or business will find themselves facing an investigation by the Health & Safety Executive.  If a person were to die then you could be facing a Corporate Manslaughter prosecution.

Personnel lifts require a thorough examination at least every 6 months and non-personnel lifts require a thorough examination at least every 12 months.

A Tail-lift requires that the operative is stood on the platform during operation, so this makes it a personnel lift and that means it needs to have a thorough inspection every six months.  The inspection needs to be done by a competent person or company, Fleet Risk Consultants can help you find a suitable company to do the inspection for you.

If you want us to help locate a company to do your inspections please contact us.
