School Minibuses and Tachographs

This week has been a rather interesting one from the perspective of how the users of school minibuses should manage the use of the minibus.  Some minibus uses are governed by the EU Drivers’ Hours and Tachograph Regulations, which can involve the use of tachograph equipment and all the issues surrounding them.

We have covered both ends of the spectrum this week from telling one school that their use requires a tachograph to be fitted to advising a different school using the minibus in a different way that they did not require a tachograph.

Where a use has an exemption we have provided a written statement to that effect that the driver can carry with him.  This allows him to help the Enforcement Agency which has stopped him understand why he does not have a tachograph in the vehicle or being used.

The rules can be quite complex and different uses can have different exemptions and if you get it wrong it is your fault.

If you are not sure you could check with VOSA, a transport solicitor or even us!
