Could your photograph get you into trouble?

When the new style driving licences were introduced back in 1998 they came with a requirement for a photograph to be supplied to the DVLA, the problem is that the photograph is only legally valid for 10 years.

In reality this means that you are required by The Driving Licence (Community Driving Licence) Regulations 1998 to provide a photograph that is a current likeness of you and further you must surrender that licence after 10 years and replace it.

It also states that the failure to surrender the licence is an offence, in the same way as it is an offence not to notify the DVLA that you have moved house.

The penalties attached to this are a fine of £1000.00 and possibly the removal of authority to drive a vehicle.  This in turn could lead to your insurance being invalid.

If you have a photocard licence in your possession I suggest that you remove it from the place you keep it and look at the front.  You will see a date marked by 4b, this is the date your licence expires.

If your licence has expired you need to contact DVLA NOW and if it is due to expire you should make arrangements to change it soon.
