The Government is planning to reduce road deaths
I have to say, what took them so long? Here at Fleet Risk Consultants we have been taking action to achieve that for the past three years in conjunction with our clients.
The government have this ridiculous idea that a blanket speed reduction will reduce road deaths, they seem to not understand that the idiots who are crashing on these rural roads at high speed are unlikely to obey the new speed limit anyway. Also the blanket reduction in speed limit will make it even more difficult to legally and safely overtake slower traffic than before.
We are continuing to help employers reduce the likelihood of their employees being killed whilst travelling in vehicles. Our clients have, with our help, established robust systems to ensure that they use vehicles in a manner that is both safe and cost effective. They have managed to reduce their running costs by having fewer collisions and less damage to their vehicles.
They have also reduced the possibility of prosecution under Corporate Manslaughter Legislation and other legislation covering vehicle use.
Lower speed limits, which are being suggested, are not guaranteed to work as it is the appropriate use of speed that is important rather than the adherence to a blanket speed limit. The lower speed limits are more likely to increase the number of drivers having points on their licence and the increased revenue in fines.
Reducing the National Speed Limit from 60 mph to 50 mph will only reduce the legal maximum impact speed from 120mph to 100mph, which is still enough to do you serious harm. This obsession with speed is really rather irritating.
It is my opinion that there are a number of ways to reduce road deaths, but the MP’s will need to look into the issues more deeply than speed and look at the education, licensing and culture of driving to find the solutions.
