European Driver CPC Training – What is invloved?
As I have previously posted, there are new rules in place for minibus and bus drivers and in September similar rules will apply to drivers of HGV’s. Since the last article was published I have been asked by a number of drivers to explain in more detail what is expected and some information on the curriculum.
Existing holders of C1, C, D1 & D driving licence categories will have to undertake 35 hours of training every 5 years. There is the ability within the legislation to split that training down into more manageable chunks of 7 hours training every year.
It is my belief, given teh curriculum, that most drivers will get more from doing the shorter training stints and with annual training the important parts of the training will remain fresh in their minds.
The curriculum covers the areas from safe loading and fuel efficiency to vehicle compassion and tachographs. The exact curriculum can be found here. I think the curriculum is a good one, even if some areas will not be applicable to all drivers.
In theory each driver could sit the same course every year and be qualified, but to me that defeats the object of the training. If you as a driver gain a broad spectrum of the additional skills available to you then you will be both a better driver and a more valuable driver.
Most drivers will be glad that there is no exam at the end of the training, but you should expect any reputable training provider to make sure that you have understood the training with some sort of assessment. European Driver Training Limited are one such training provider.
