Going Green – Can we be bothered?
I was reading this article on the Businesscar website yesterday and I was reminded of the LPG fiasco some years ago and it makes me wonder whether the government can be really bothered with the new ‘greener’ technologies.
Before I go on too far I should say that I am not convinced that electric vehicles are all the green because the electricity has to be generated somehow and that is usually by burning fossil fuels and if you believe all the hype is not very eco friendly.
My problem is that to prove or dis-prove any thesis you have to conduct a proper experiment and there is little point in having an electric vehicle if you can’t find somewhere to plug it in. This was the problem with the push to LPG.
The government pushed millions of pounds in subsidies to allow the vehicles to be converted and then failed to ensure there was a supply infrastructure in place. This meant that converted vehicles were running on petrol for most of the time, completely defeating the object. Mind you LPG is still a fossil fuel so perhaps it is a good thing that they are being phased out.
I still maintain the future is in Hydrogen and i am looking forward to the ongoing developments in that field.
The government and local authorities could improve our carbon footprint by managing the roads better though. In Germany the urban roads have variable speed limits coupled with co-ordinated traffic lights, this means if you drive at the posted speed limit you will get a green light at every set of traffic lights. Guess what happen?
Yep the drivers obey the speed limits and the vehicles are travelling at the optimum speed for efficient motoring as they are not stopping and starting all the time. Sheer genius, safer motoring all round.
