The talk of the chancellor of the exchequer putting into effect a car scrappage scheme is in my opinion a good one. It would have a positive effect in a number of areas, not just in a potential boost to the new car market.
We have yet to see the details of the proposed scheme, but if it is done correctly some of the benefits will be potentially huge. A car scrappage scheme is where the government gives the owners of older vehicles an incentive to replace their old vehicle with a new one.
The benefits of this type of scheme are many and varied.
The obvious one is the sale of new cars, an area that has taken a bit of a downturn recently.
There is also a environmental benefit as newer vehicles are always more economical and produce fewer emissions than their older counterparts. This also means that they will use less fuel and this means that we will use up the oil reserves less quickly.
The other thing that each new evolution of vehicle is, is safer. The new technologies that the manufacturers develop to aid safety are included into each new model. Things like Electronic Stability Programmes and Antilock Braking Systems, are hugely beneficial to the safety of drivers and other road users.
There are a significant number of vehicles on Britains roads that are dangerous due to their age and a scheme that helps people reduce their risks has got to be a good thing.
There are however some negatives to the proposed scrappage scheme, there are some great vehicles out there and losing them would be a huge loss for all of us car enthusiasts, but the positives to overall outweigh the negatives.
