A reminder of the dangers posed by the motorway hard shoulder

I was reading this article on the BBC website and it reminds me again why I always tell drivers never to remain in or near the vehicle whilst it is on the hard shoulder of the motorway.

The article does not say whether the vehicle had just broken down or had been stationary for a period of time, but it is worth taking the time to remind the readers here of the precautions they should be taking, as an absolute minimum.

If you do need to use the hard shoulder switch on the hazard warning lights, sidelights, get out of your vehicle and get behind the barrier or up the grass bank to the rear of your vehicle. Ensure you take you mobile telephone with you. If you are concerned for your personal safety, leave a nearside door open on your vehicle. This will allow you to enter it if you feel threatened.
