Has Boris made an Intelligent Move?
There are reports that TfL (Transport for London) have decided to fit a bus with Intelligent Speed Adaptation hardware, now is this an intelligent move or just a bit of fancy PR?
Having been involved in this project previously I have to admit to being a little surprised that TfL of all people are using this technology. The ISA hardware works by limiting the maximum speed of the vehicle to the posted speed limit for the road being travelled and the vehicle being driven.
My interest is really based on the fact that I would be surprised if a bus running around inside the M25 is ever likely to exceed the speed limit, especially with a professional driver at the wheel. I would also be interested to see whether it saves them any money too.
I can see the benefit in vehicles driven by people who are unaware of the speed limit which is applicable to the road or vehicle and there are plenty of those people on the roads. Most van drivers I meet are unaware that they have different speed limits to the cars on certain roads.
I will await the outcome of Boris’ trial with interest and in the meantime if you are worried by the speed you staff are travelling at, give us a call and we will give you some advice.
