There is always discussion in the industry about the HMRC Advisory Fuel Rates (AFRS) for fuel costs and the Approved Mileage Allowance Payments (AMAPS) for business use of private cars.
The regular discussion I have is with drivers who think they should be paid more per mile than the HMRC will allow. My usual response to a driver is “How much does your vehicle cost per mile then?”. The usual answer I get from 90% of car owners and drivers is along the lines of “I don’t know” or “I haven’t a clue”.
I find this slightly worrying, because it is impossible to know whether your vehicle is costing you money or making you money without this vital information. Oh yes, making you money is not a typographic error, you can make money from running your vehicle the right way.
If you choose the right vehicle, and I do not mean the smallest vehicle either, it is possible for you to use your vehicle for business and make enough of a profit to cover the costs of your personal or private miles.
