Back to School – Let us all make it painless

The school holidays are coming to an end and the roads that have been less congested over recent weeks will be returning to normal. Importantly though there will be children crossing roads again after a period of time that may have enabled drivers to forget about them.

Be on your guard though, because some of these children and parents too will be making these journeys for the first time, full of excitement and new school nerves. They are unlikely to be thinking of the cars, vans and trucks which are going about their business too.

The MOST important thing to remember is, in my opinion, that when a vehicle and child collide the child will always come of worst regardless of why it happened. I really do not like dealing with collisions involving children so I hope that all you drivers concentrate that little bit harder over the next week or so and if you are in any doubt as to the intentions of any child near the road, slow down first rather than take the risk.

My other suggestion may require you to have a bit more self control though.

I suggest that for the next three weeks, yes 3 weeks, you travel past schools at a speed of 15 mph or less between the hours of 8am and 9:30am and 2:30pm and 4pm. It will cost you nothing at all as a driver, but it might make the biggest difference ever to a small or even a big child. I tend to do this all year round anyway, children are rather unpredictable, but getting everyone to do that might take time.
