Guess what’s around the corner?
Can you guess?
No of course you can’t, no-one can.
This prompts me to ask the question – ‘Why do so many drivers hurtle around corners with no idea of what they will find when they get there?’ The main rule of the road is to drive at a speed that allows you to stop in the distance you can see to be clear.
Some of the things you may find around the corner could be a tractor (very solid and likely to cause you a lot of pain), horses (equally likely to cause you pain as they are quite solid), debris, trees or worst of all children. Trust me on this if you career around a corner and hit a child at 50-60 mph you are very likely to kill that young person, and that death will haunt you forever. I have met drivers who have injured children and whether the driver was at fault or not the drivers were all devastated by the outcome of the collision.
So next time you feel the urge to push the envelope along a narrow back lane, just think about what you can’t see around that corner and whether you want to hit it or not. You have to manage your own risks as no-one else will do it for you.
Ask yourself this – ‘Is it worth the gamble?’
